designing your bespoke wedding rings

Congrats! You just got engaged and you’re working through your list of wedding admin. If you’re lost on where to start with your all important wedding rings, look no further..

1. shape

A good place to start designing is the shape of your ring

See the table for our most popular wedding band shapes. This is not a comprehensive guide; we love to create wiggly shaped and organic bands too.

We can also craft your ring to perfectly fit around the shape of your engagement ring.

2. Width/ thickness of the band

As a general guideline for wedding bands, rings commonly range from approhereximately 2–4mm for narrower styles and 4–6mm for wider styles.
We’ve put together some reference images of with widths here.

3. metal

Now you’ve considered your design, which metal would you like your ring made in? We work with silver, 9ct gold, 18ct gold and platinum.
In terms of colour, 9ct and 18ct rings are available in yellow gold, white gold or rose gold.

Silver is the most affordable option of the precious metals. It’s shiny white appearance and lower price makes it a popular choice.

9ct gold strikes a good balance between durablity and value. While it is less expensive than 18 carat gold, its lower gold content results in a paler yellow appearance. As it contains a lower gold content, 9ct is more durable than 18ct.

18ct gold offers a richer, buttery colour due to its higher gold content. However, this comes at a higher price point, which may not fit every budget.

Platinum is exceptionally durable and rare. It offers a remarkable weight and a stunning shine that remains vibrant over time. Nevertheless, the premium price of platinum may be a consideration for some.

Using sentimental metals is a lovely way to repurpose inherited or broken jewellery. Using sentimental gold can also significantly reduce the cost of your wedding ring. If you’d like to melt down your gold and use it toward a new piece, we just need to know the carat and weight of the gold, plus a photo of the item.

4. stones

This step is optional, so feel free to skip it.

However, adding gemstones can elevate your wedding or engagement ring. We can source suitable gems for you, or you can either provide your own stones for us to incorporate.

When choosing stones for a ring intended for everyday wear, consider their hardness and durability. The most durable gemstones for daily wear include diamonds, sapphires and rubies; these faceted stones are best suited to settings such flush or claw (prong) settings.

Decorative settings like grain and star settings can be used for small accent stones.

If you’d like help selecting stones or deciding on the best setting for everyday wear vs. occasional wear, tell us which gemstones you’re considering and how you plan to wear the piece, and we’ll advise on the best options.

5. ring size

This is the easiest part of the process. Where possible, it’s advisable to get your ring professionally measured by a jeweller. Let the jeweller know if you’re commissioning a dainty or chunky ring, as this can alter your sizing slightly.

The next best thing is to order a ring sizer to measure your finer at home. We sell them here - we’ll post them out with written instructions so you can measure yourself conveniently at home.

6. textures and extras

TEXTURES
In terms of texture, the most common finishes are polished or matte/satin, but we offer a range of options to suit different styles. Hammered texture is particularly popular as it catches and reflects the light beautifully. We can also create more unusual textures, such as fingerprint impressions for a truly personal touch.

ENGRAVING (optional extra)
You can choose from several classic text styles for engraving, including traditional script. For something really personal, send us a sample of your handwriting and we’ll copy it onto the signet. We can also engrave floral motifs taken from your wedding bouquet for a meaningful, bespoke detail.
